What Do You Know About Framing?

One of the most exciting periods of new home construction is the framing stage, when two-dimensional plans take on three-dimensional shape. As floors, walls, and a roof rise from the ground, the owners can envision the finished home and walk through its spaces.
As a professional builder, we are always seeking better ways to build. The framing stage provides several opportunities to construct a home faster and within the budget without sacrificing quality. The latest techniques for framing actually improve a home's structural integrity, performance, and durability. Here are just a few of the methods and materials we consider for this stage of construction:

Advanced framing. This technique removes unnecessary structural components like extra wall studs and blocking. By reducing the amount of lumber we use, we lower both costs and waste. Because it  increases quality and reduces waste, advanced framing is a tenet of sustainable green building practices around the country.

Engineered lumber. Engineered lumber is made from strands or chips of wood that are reassembled with glue, heat and pressure into large beams and I-shaped sections. Tough and stable, engineered lumber allows us to span the longer distances common in open floor plans and high ceilings. These products are frequently made from smaller and sustainably grown timber resources, instead of old-growth trees, which makes them more environmentally attractive, as well.

Panels and trusses. For decades, builders have used roof trusses (pre-made sections of the roof's frame) to build houses better and faster. The same technology is now applied to floors and walls, with similar benefits. Factory-built and quality-controlled panels and trusses allow us to create unique spaces almost impossible with traditional framing techniques. These components also reduce our waste stream, leaving a clean job site during what can be a very messy stage of construction.
While they may not look it, homes today are built quite differently than they were even a decade ago. Nowhere is this difference more evident than in the new framing products and techniques we now have at our command. These systems allow us to build more efficient, higher quality homes, delivering a final product that performs as promised and meets the needs and expectations of our owners.

Move-In Day in I'On

We are excited to have another wonderful family settling into their new custom home in I'On Village - and we love how this home came together!  The home was designed by Clarke Design Group with 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms with an additional finished room above the garage with its own bathroom.  The home has ample porch space and a large, lovely yard perfect for this young family.  Project Manager Chris Hulsey and Designer Kathryn Elliott did a great job of bringing this custom home together to perfectly meet the needs of these clients - welcome home and welcome to the Structures Family!

Structures Loves a House Party!

The Structures team had a great time at East Cooper Habitat for Humanity's House Party on Friday night. This annual fundraiser and auction had a great new venue this year: The Cooper River Room at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. We had a chance to bid on some amazing items, and enjoyed listening and dancing to the sounds of the Plantation Singers and the Fantastic Voyage Band! It was a beautiful evening spent with great friends who share our commitment to supporting Habitat's mission of providing safe, affordable housing to the East Cooper community.  Here's hoping that ECHFH raised enough money to build more homes for local families in need. We are proud to again be a sponsor of this event!

Structures Sponsors Model UN Trip

Structures Building Company is a proud sponsor of East Cooper Montessori Charter School's Model United Nations program. For the third year in a row, Structures was honored to help sixth grade students realize their dream of traveling to New York City to participate in the Montessori Model United Nations Program. This year, 28 six-graders became delegates of Indonesia, Cambodia, the Ukraine, and the Netherlands. They worked on solutions to such important world problems as nuclear nonproliferation, poverty reduction, and malnutrition. The group left for the Big Apple on April 24 and returned on April 27.

The program is a year-long commitment that begins in the classroom, where students spend months researching their assigned countries and topics and practicing their negotiation and public speaking skills. Each student is responsible for writing a position paper and preparing a speech to present at the MMUN conference. Once they arrive in New York, they spend two days in caucus sessions with  students from all over the world to  draft resolutions on real world issues. On the third day, students travel to the United Nations building where they sit in the seats of actual UN delegates to vote on their resolutions. Several ECMCS students were selected to represent their committees by reading their final resolutions before an audience of nearly 2,000 student delegates, teachers, and parents. That's quite an accomplishment for any twelve-year-old!

As a builder in the I'On neighborhood, where this public charter school is located, Structures has always looked for ways to support East Cooper Montessori. But this school is especially close to Structure's heart: four children of Structures employees have attended the school, and two of them have traveled to New York as MMUN delegates in years past! Congratulations to all of this year's MMUN delegates!
